Styrofoam

Styrofoam Cups (and Spray Cans)

"Back in the 1970's spray cans of hair spray...and other consumer products used ozone depleting substances, so environmentally conscious consumers stopped using them. In response to consumer pressure, companies began in the late 1970s to switch away from using ozone depleting substances...Then later the Clean Air Act and EPA regulations mandated restrictions on environmentally harmful propellants...LIke spray cans, polystyrene "styrofoam" cups previously damaged the ozone layer. They don't do this anymore, so you shouldn't feel guilty about using them in moderation."

Michael Brower, Ph. D and Warren Leon, Ph. D. and the Union of Concerned Scientists. "The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices: Practical Advice from the Union of Concerned Scientists." Three Rivers Press, New York, 1999, p. 135.

Styrofoam is bad, but it's not the worst. Try again.
